The Gibson Tarquini Group was hired directly by The New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation to create an innovative learning environment to address the unique needs of students transitioning from elementary and middle school settings into high school. Lincoln High School adopted the concept of a separate Ninth Grade Academy in 2002. The facility on Harrison Ave was purchased for the express purpose of creating this state-of-the-art learning center.

The new 24,500 SF addition houses technology-driven science and computer labs and general ed classrooms. The renovated space includes a reading room, special ed classrooms, a nurse's office and administrative space. Facility improvements included roof and window replacements, HVAC upgrades, boiler replacement, plumbing and electrical upgrades.

The school was named The Charles T. Epps, Jr. Freshman Academy after the current superintendent who championed the effort to create this exceptional learning environment for ninth graders.
